Live At Alley Cat Records
Halloween, 1997
by Turkey Makes Me Sleepy
Turkey Makes Me Sleepy's first public performance took place at the now defunct Alley Cat Records store on Massachusetts Street in Lawrence, Kansas, October 31st, 1997. TMMS members Mike Adams (Mikadams), Charles Rice Goff III, and Eric Matchett provided an intimate audience with a variety show of audio treats and tricks. Massachusetts street on Halloween is filled with kids and parents, and the record store had its street speakers on that night to broadcast the spooky sonics to each and every passer by.
The opening sounds set the "Qualmish" mood, as the performers integrated instrumental rhythms and noises with samples from prerecorded Halloween records and tapes.
Next came what Goff referred to as the "straightest song" that the band knew how to play: a reasonably honest cover of the Moody Blues' "Nights In White Satin."
This was followed by a rendition of "Edna Lena Loo," a piece from the group's first (and up to that point ONLY) cassette release. Edna extended herself into a long spooky improvisation which was later appropriately entitled: "Eidolon."
Next up, the group bounced through a rendition of "Padukem," the pop classic from Goff's 1997 cassette entitled: "The Somnambulist."
The improvisational action then incorporated the audience. Goff asked those present to supply some themes for the next piece, and the audience responded with enough ideas to inspire the band to pour out a haunting tale of "Mad Cow Abductions." Then another improvisation followed this, entitled: "Hurlathrombo."
The finale of the performance was the darkest and most bone-chilling version of Grand Funk's "We're An American Band," that has likely ever bent an ear.
The entire show was released by Taped Rugs Productions on cassette in 1998, rereleased on CDR in 2005, and is now presented here for the world to share.
